| Top Secret Tactics:
The following
tips and tactics are very important. Only the best Red Alert players can
use them effectively. Certain strategies are simply effective, while other
strategies can be considered bugs in the game. I have discovered them while
playing Red Alert, from other Web Pages, and from other Red Alert players.
They can be used in single-player games but are most beneficial in multiplayer
games.
There
are, in fact, a few glitches in Red Alert that can be exploited in Single
and Mutliplayer games. Its not cheating since everyone can do it, but it
is cheap since everyone doesn’t know how to do it. However by using
these bugs to your advantage, you can gain a competitive edge on your opponent.
The Allies have several speed bugs dealing with Cruisers, Destroyers, and
Transports. You can find more inf. on the Allies speed bugs in Huge Hippo's
Allies section (sorry, Hippo declined to have his page integrated into
CpuJunky.com). The Soviets are not to be left out though! Two of the
most feared Soviet units are the Heavy and Mammoth tanks. They are strong
yet slightly slower than the Allies' tanks. Not any more!
The
Mammoth tanks are strong but slow. Try grouping them with a Mine Layer
and putting them into formation. Select all the Mammoths you want to be
sped up and at least one Mine Layer, hit CTRL+(any number), and then "F".
Now tell the group to move somewhere. The Mammoth tanks will travel at
the speed of the Mine Layer! This same principle works with any tanks grouped
and formed with another vehicle faster than it! Grouping is good!
Many
of you think that all you need to do is make tanks and tell them to attack.
There is more you can do to increse you chance of surivival. If you attack
your enemies base, fine, but most of the time you will encounter some resistence
along the way. Many times, a Red Alert game breaks out into a huge tank
war with a group of tanks fighting another group of tanks. Now you will
learn how to become victories in these tank battles!
There are two main ways to emerge victorious. Both involve moving your
tanks around while fighting. The idea is that a moving object (in this
case a tank) is much harder to destroy then a stationary one. Unfortunatly,
you cannot directly order your tanks to move and fire at the same time,
but there are two ways around this.
Scatter Dodging:
The first, and easiest way to gain an edge in tank fighting
is to use the scatter key "x". Group your tanks together and tell them
all to attack an enemy unit. When all of your tanks are in range to the
enemy and are firing, begin to hit the "x" key at a constant rate. This
commands all your units to begin to scatter. Your tanks will move randomly
in all directions yet still fire at the enemy you targeted! This will keep
you fighting while not taking severe damage. This method is not the most
effective way to dodge. Because all your units are going in all directions,
they tend to get out of their firing range (so they stop fighting). To
avoid this, occasionally hit the group number and tell them to attack an
enemy unit. Any tanks out of range will head pack toward the battle. When
all tanks are fighting, begin to scatter again.
Targeted Tank Dodging:
This method has been found to be the most effectice in tank
battles. You follow the same procedure as in scatter dodging, yet focus
more on the individual tanks rather than the group. When the two groups
of tanks begin to shoot, pay attention as to which tank your opponent is
targeting. When you figure out which tank he is aiming at, quickly select
that tank and tell him to move somewhere. Usually what happens is that
your enemy spends his time attacking a moving object (and therefore hard
to kill object) as he loses tank after tank. If you see your enemy has
picked a new tank to attack, just tell him to move. If you master this
method, your opponents will have a much harder time destroying your tanks.
I've fought in many tank battles where I have had less tanks than my enemy,
yet have come out victorious in many of them.
| Advanced Base Construction: |
When
you are building your base, you most likely just throw things down wherever
they fit. There is actually some importance as to where you put your structures.
If you think that your base will be hit by an A-Bomb, its important to
spread out your Power Plants. More importantly, maps like Central Conflict
and North by Northwest start you out a good deal away from the majority
of ore. The easiest way to get closer to the ore is to move your MCV. Problem
is, it takes a long time to get there and deploy. The whole time you are
moving your MCV, your opponent is building structures and getting a jump
on you. There is a better way to get to the ore. I get to the ore by laying
down my structures in a linear fashion. I make a sort of bridge to the
ore. As in the picture, you can see I started out very far from the ore
but my Refineries are right next to it. Many Red Alert players will deploy
right away and build close. They end up having to go very far to get their
ore leaving you with an enormous advantage.
